  • Promoting programs that address and eradicate the root causes of crime
  • Economic and workforce development strategies to attract more green-collar and family-supporting jobs
  • Positive youth development through Youth Commission initiatives and expansion of the Durham Youth Fire Marshall program
  • Activities promoting positive esteem among our youth and showcasing their talent
  • Neighborhood revitalization initiatives resulting in renewal of neighborhood spirit and community building, i.e., NECD Southside/Rolling Hills, Old Five Points, Fayetteville Street Corridor and West Chapel Hill Street

Sustainability/Environmental Stewardship

  • An increased emphasis on ecologically sensitive development and watershed protection standards
  • Transit-oriented development/Smart Growth
  • Meeting pollution-reduction goals and requirements
  • Green building and retrofits, water conservation and efficiency of plant operations
  • Fuel efficiency and alternative fuels, LED streetlights and enhanced recycling efforts

Economy/Fiscal Accountability

  • Monthly monitoring of the strength of internal controls through my work on the Audit Service Oversight Committee
  • A transparent budget process through citizen engagement / participation
  • Monitoring contracts and projects through our Capital Program Advisory Committee
  • Mainatin AAA ratings
  • Continuing to monitor revenues and expenditure carefully throughout the budget year

  • Life-long resident of Durham
  • Attended Durham Public Schools, received Bachelors and Masters degrees from N.C. Central University
  • Director of Equal Opportunity/Equity Assurance Department for City of Durham
  • 23-year career with City Government, extensive knowledge of internal operations
  • First recipient of the Diversity Change Agent Award
  • Volunteer = Neal Middle Schoo; Past Chairwoman, Durham County Democratic Party; Obama Delegate; 2008 Democratic National Convention; Member State Executive Committee, Democratic Party
